Experience the sophisticated jazz side of Steely Dan with the Chris Ingham Quintet – Steely Jazz, live at the Livermead Cliff Hotel in Torquay on Thursday 12 November 2026.
The music of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the duo behind Steely Dan, stood apart from the rock music of the 1970s. Their songs combined sophisticated musicianship, cryptic lyrics, complex harmonies and an unmistakable jazz influence. Becker and Fagen were themselves great admirers of the leading jazz musicians of the 1950s and 1960s, and their recordings featured some of the finest session players of the era.
Among the renowned musicians who contributed to the Steely Dan sound were jazz and contemporary music legends including Michael Brecker, Bernard Purdie, Larry Carlton, Freddie Washington and Steve Gadd.
Steely Dan reimagined through jazz
Chris Ingham’s Steely Jazz takes a fresh look at the remarkable Steely Dan songbook, bringing its intricate melodies, sophisticated harmonies and rhythmic complexity into the intimate setting of a jazz quintet.
The result is an exciting live jazz interpretation of some of Steely Dan’s best-known songs, alongside lesser-known gems and deep cuts from the band’s extraordinary catalogue.
The concert features music from the quintet’s new recording, Walter, Donald and..., as well as favourites including “Don’t Lose That Number” and “Josie”.
Expect classic Steely Dan material from acclaimed albums including Aja, Gaucho, Countdown to Ecstasy and Katy Lied, alongside some of the band’s less familiar tracks.
