The Sound of BlueNote
Wednesday 19 February 2020 8.30pm Churston Golf Club

The Sound of BlueNote consists of five of the most prominent musicians in the south paying
tribute to the legendary jazz record label: BlueNote Records. Focusing on the iconic period of the
1950’s and 60’s, the band plays tunes by BlueNote legends Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Art
Blakey, Horace Silver and more. All the material is meticulously transcribed from the original
recordings and is performed with the same swinging intensity that defines the BlueNote sound.
Whilst the group now perform mainly as a quintet, The Sound of BlueNote have previously
extended their line up to feature some of the top names from the UK scene. Guest artists have
included Nigel Price, Alan Barnes, Mark Nightingale, Gilad Atzmon, Ian Shaw, Dave O’Higgins and
Jim Mullen.
‘The Sound of BlueNote takes its lead from the greatest jazz recordings on the iconic jazz label,
however, this is no slavish copy! The band perform gems from a treasure trove of repertoire but
retains an identity, impressively, of its own. Slick ensemble passages alternate with inspired solos
to bring this exceptional material very much to life! This may be a celebration of a golden musical
age, but it’s presented in a modern and very relevant context.’ – Alan Barnes
‘There is a bunch of talented guys in the south, who pay an unashamed homage to some of the
giants of yesteryear, such as Stanley Turrentine, Lee Morgan and Hank Mobley, and they do it very
well indeed. Canadian sax man Terry Quinney and trumpeter Andy Urquhart deftly deliver intrigue
and soulful lines in remarkably tidy unison and then dazzle with their virtuosic improvisations, all
the while driven by a top flight rhythm section. Don’t miss any opportunity to see and indeed hear
The Sound of BlueNote.’ – Nigel Price
