Philip Clouts Trio

Wednesday 7 November 2018

Philip Clouts

South African born pianist Philip Clouts, known for his work with his seven piece band ‘Zubop’, has developed a more intimate performance context with this trio, playing jazz standards, Latin jazz and original material.

The mellow, melodic approach of the Philip Clouts Trio has been warmly received at many venues in and around London, including the Archduke, Pizza Express, Cafe Med, The 606 Club, The Vortex, Farnham Maltings, The Royal Festival Hall and The Spitz Arts Centre.

Philip Clouts’ career has included playing at Ronnie Scotts, Birmingham Symphony Hall and Glastonbury and WOMAD festivals, and regular radio play on BBC Radio 3, Radio London, Radio Scotland and Jazz FM.

“It has a very infectious feel-good quality about it” Jazz FM
“Energetic music..an enjoyable, easy swinging debut.” Jazzwise
“An enormously enjoyable set of accessible but distinctive originals. Like the compositions, Clouts’ solos are thoughtful and persuasively structured” Jazz UK
“Although clearly steeped in the music of his native South Africa, Clouts touches numerous other bases, and his deft, lively, intensely rhythmic piano is skilfully complemented throughout by a vigorous but sensitive rhythm section.” Jazz Review
“The trio…cook up some nice, tricky rhythms to keep you alert, and control an impressive range of dynamics. Clouts has particularly subtle judgement when it comes to harmonising simple melodies, making them neither too bare nor over-elaborate” The Observer
“Philip Clouts is an accomplished leader.” The Independent
