Joy Ellis Quartet
Wednesday 17 May 2017
For those of you, myself included, who really appreciate a fine, female, jazz vocalist then Joy Ellis will be perfect, singing both jazz standards and her own compositions. You will also be able to welcome back guitarist Rob Luft, who played guitar so well with Big Bad Wolf, as part of Joy’s quartet.
Joy Ellis is a pianist, singer and composer based in London. Over the past year, she has been working on an original album entitled ‘Life On Land’ for release in Spring 2017. The album reflects her passion for jazz, her love of groove and dance music, her classical roots as a pianist and the mournful, soulful aspects of being a singer-songwriter developed over many years singing the poetry of artists such as Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Her touring has included such venues as Ronnie Scott’s, the Barbican Pit Theatre and the Savoy Hotel in London, the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland and No Black Tie Jazz Club in Kuala Lumpur.
She has performed with an array of fantastic musicians on the UK music scene including Omar Lye-Fook MBE, Anita Wardell and Nikki Iles. In 2012, she won 1st prize in the National BASBWE Festival for her composition for Concert Wind Band. Renowned British composer Philip Sparke described her as a “composer with an original voice and the means to express it”.
Line-up: Joy Ellis – piano/Rhodes & voice, Rob Luft – guitar, Henrik Jensen – double bass, Adam Osmianski – drums
